Jack felt dizzy, like he’d blacked out a moment or two. Chest heaving, he struggled to stay up on his knees as he glanced over at Bellamy who lay motionless on the ground. Blood ran down Jack’s forehead. From a cut along his hairline where Bellamy had sliced the face mask right off him.

It wasn’t a fair fight and he’d fought dirty, but it hadn’t been fair from the start. Bellamy had smuggled a real damned sword into this fight while he’d struggled with a blunted practice sword. Bellamy almost took his head off with it.

He’d been on his last leg before he’d ever ducked under that rope and accepted that he was probably going to die. Yet, he was still breathing. And he still had his head attached to his body.

He wasn’t about to stand there and let Bellamy just kill him though. He had no remorse about fighting dirty and knocking the dude’s lights out. He’d do it again. He was still in this game to win Talia’s favor. Best news he’d had in a long, long time.

He smiled. It wasn’t over. He still had time to win her heart.

Then he realized that people were cheering. For him. Chanting his name.

Gianni and the set crew flooded into the ring, congratulating him, patting him on the back, applauding him until he couldn’t contain his grin.

His arms and stomach burned. He reached down to his purple jacket. Torn. Bloodied. From that real sword. Sharp enough to slice off his face mask and cut through a fencing jacket to his bare skin. Made him want to deck the dude all over again.

Again, he glanced over at Bellamy. Still out.

Shaking his head, he struggled to his feet. He needed to get Bellamy out of the ring and over to the set doctor. He’d clocked him pretty hard on the chin when he wasn’t expecting it. A move out of the dude’s own playbook.

He slipped past Gianni and the crew, kneeling, his balance faltering. He almost tumbled over top of Bellamy, but caught himself with his right hand. Sending waves of pain up his arm. He gritted his teeth, eyes narrowing as he rode out the pain.

Bellamy hadn’t moved. He reached over to his neck, feeling for a pulse.

His heart leaped into his throat. None.

He pressed his ear to Bellamy’s chest, listening for a heartbeat. Nothing.

An icy bloom of fear surged through him. Bellamy was dead!

Jack pulled off his blood-soaked gloves with his teeth and threw himself forward. He found the notch below Bellamy’s sternum and started frantic compressions.

“Call an ambulance!” he shouted. “Dude’s not breathing.”

The minutes fled past until someone laid hands against his arms, gently sliding him back. Taking over compressions.

He looked up. The set doctor.

And running across the courtyard, two paramedics with a transport board. Into the ring. Dropping down beside Bellamy and the doctor.

Blood dripped down the side of his face and onto his chin as he sank back on his heels in the grass, feeling sick.

He’d just killed this dude.
